She is from Amritsar, Punjab. Her dad shifted to Mumbai in 1968. Those days, she used to visit a friend , whose house was located near Shambhu Sen's (music director Samir Sen's dad) house. Shambhu Sen used to teach dance at his house. So then, she too started to learn dance from him. In fact, she was more in to dance. Even today, she loves to dance but acting just happened after Barood . Her father, her mom, three sisters and one brother make-up the parent side ofher family, and she the youngest. Her dad is in to business. She dropped out of college (first year) because of Barood .

Her dad's friend Janki Das (actor), had told him that veteran filmmaker Mr. Pramod Chakraborty (producer-director of Barood ) was looking for a new girl for his film. He advised her to try for the lead role. And he also told her that Rishi Kapoor was selected to be the hero of the film. Just for Rishi Kapoor, she said she would try her luck, and she got the role.

Shoma was discovered by publicist Deep Sagar. He renamed her Neelu Bobby. When she met Pramod Chakraborthy, she ditched Deep Sagar and the name Neelu Bobby .

There were reports she married a NRI named Bobby from Canada. This was in 1984. She never confirmed the news.

Real name is Neelam Arora .

In the early 70's she signed a few film with the screen name "Neel Kamal"". The films were shelved when she refused to shoot those films. She told the producers she was getting married. Publicist Deep Sagar told her to say this lie so she could get out of her contracts with them.
